Nobel laureates have written an open letter to MEPs pleading with them to 'reject the darkness of anti-science fearmongering' ahead of a crucial vote next Wednesday on NGTs/gene editing. My post here:

Nice piece in the The Guardian covering WePlanet open letter to MEPs on gene editing regulation - signed by 35 Nobel laureates... but will MEPs listen to the voices of science or to those always trying to stop innovation in Europe?

The era of fossil fuels is coming to an end. Coal, oil, and gas, which have been humanity’s energy mainstays since the dawn of the Industrial Revolution, are set to be fully replaced by clean energy sources like wind, solar, and nuclear - my take on COP28:

Message to people in the Global North who may be shocked by this: how many of you cook with charcoal from deforested natural reserves? How many of you cook with gas? Which would you prefer? Yes electric is ultimately better, but we have to stop deforestation/pollution NOW.

Israel is behaving like Russia with its indiscriminate terror bombing of civilians in Gaza. Uncritical support for Israel from the West simply proves to the rest of the world the double standards that come with human rights and war crimes arguments in support of Ukraine.

The best analysis I've read so far of COP28, by Fiona Harvey in the The Guardian. Makes the critical point that this outcome is much more than 'words', which is why the Saudis & other oil producers fought so hard to block it. They lost, and that is crucial.

Never mind the fossil fuels language - perhaps the most striking thing in the COP28 decision is the mention of nuclear... not so long ago this was firmly kept out of any agreement by the combined might of NGOs and countries like Germany that prefer gas. No longer it seems!

'Nuclear has achieved level of acceptance such that policymakers now make grand pronouncements about it that they can’t keep—just like promises to limit warming to 1.5 degrees or provide poor countries with billions for adaptation.' Me in Foreign Policy foreignpolicy.com/2023/12/11/nuc…

Terrifying - Bob Kagan is right... if Trump is re-elected the path to a US dictatorship is pretty much clear.

'A Trump dictatorship is increasingly inevitable. We should stop pretending.'

Approaching 1.5°C: how will we know we’ve reached this crucial warming mark?

The Paris Agreement does not define 'temperature rise', so recognition of 1.5°C being reached may be delayed

1. In this week’s column I rashly attempt to work out how much it would cost to restore a functioning public sector and put the country right. It’s a very rudimentary effort: a proper job would take months and a wide pool of expertise. But ... 🧵

You can now be fined £50k if you get caught developing lab-grown meat in Italy. Huge triumph for the livestock lobby stopping science in its tracks, and blocking the plant-based alt-protein revolution in the country. Dreadful.

American cars are still running on Russian gas, thanks to a refining loophole that allowed the import of 30 million barrels of Kremlin oil worth $180 million. That's 105 more Kalibr cruise missiles Putin can fire at Ukrainian civilians. By Global Witness
