Honestly, I think tobacco is a great metaphor.

People have a right to use it, but it's obviously got big social harms, it's really bad for kids, the toxic effects pollute the environment for people near you, and it needs punitive taxation and regulation.

Remember when tobacco companies assured us that their products were safe and that correlation isn't causation? The same is happening with tech companies now.
