As a PhD student, all I focused on was getting a PhD.

As a PhD supervisor, I focus on training students on the long-term process that leads to getting a PhD.

I think one measure of whether a PhD is a good fit is: do you like the topic enough that when your research is feeling frustrating, you're willing to wrestle with it. There's nothing wrong with not having this level of interest! But no reason to drag yourself thru it if you don't

Here's why I encourage students to pursue a PhD:
-- They are interested in research and seem like they enjoy it
-- They seem to enjoy learning about the fundamentals of the field
-- They want to spend a few years learning about how to apply fundamentals to research

Yes, this is one trick that Americans in particular need to know because of our silly system. We need to switch to a funded masters+PhD system like the rest of the world.
