The classic Silicon Valley myopic genius of this move is that it will encourage users to stop following accounts they don’t value as much—or don’t agree with—and further isolate people into cozy cocoons of like-minded thinking. And that always goes well.

The freedom to publish allows US journalists to seek government comment, hear countervailing and national-security arguments, and make informed decisions about whether to publish, without risk of being preemptively blocked. All thanks to Ellsberg and his faith in the press. 2/2

Without Ellsberg, and the Supreme Court’s affirmation of the right of the New York Times and Washington Post to publish the Pentagon Papers, American journalism and history would be very different. 1/2

Not sure the right word is surrendered. They are profiteering off of this. It’s very much in their economic interest to allow the spread of disinformation. Short term. Longer term, the risk is the liars and propagandists prevail. Then all bets are off.

Since late May, China’s leader Xi Jinping has twice urged the nation to prepare for “extreme” scenarios or conditions—trotting out a phraseology implying possibilities of conflict as US-China competition intensifies 🧵 wsj.com/articles/china…

The remarkable life of my co-author Lingling Wei 魏玲灵, is the best example of why the U.S. needs to remain engaged with China. We often underplay the power of American ideals in the increasingly bitter fight with China. wsj.com/articles/what-… via The Wall Street Journal

Amazing book on the incarceration of Japanese -Americans during WWII by Sandy Sugawara & Catiana Garcia-Kilroy. It was, as Reagan said, a “grave wrong,” here poignantly remembered.

This important. Not just so the perpetrators of these crimes know they will be held to account, but so the victims of their crimes know there will be justice.

The journalism Evan Gershkovich does for The Wall Street Journal is exactly the kind of work the Arthur F. Burns program supports in Germany, Canada and the US. It’s not espionage; it’s vital to global understanding. Moscow should release Evan now. International Center for Journalists instagram.com/p/Cq3kViIuGwp/…

Zachary Karabell⁩ correctly diagnoses dangers of a TikTok ban. There’s only one not-dumb reason for a ban: because China won’t let US platforms operate there. Instead of trying to out-censor Beijing, the US should insist on equal access. politico.com/news/magazine/…

The West needs to start by backing independent Russian and Ukrainian journalists delivering factual information and news to Russian speakers. A good place to start is at helpdesk.media, which is fighting against disinformation in Russia daily. @thegec James P. Rubin

Great investigation by ⁦ProPublica⁩. It’s amazing how many ways people find to try evading insider-trading laws. It’s even more amazing who those people are—members of Congress, CEOs, the already-privileged. propublica.org/article/secret…
