Mike Cannon-Brookes πŸ‘¨πŸΌβ€πŸ’»πŸ§’πŸ‡¦πŸ‡Ί Caitlin Fitzsimmons πŸ§œβ€β™€οΈ I'm not arguing against the internet, but the negative impacts of monopoly power. And simply making the point that Google does appropriate news content. I agree that the proposed Treasury/ACCC regime is weird, but applaud its intent (re journalism). Don't think it will work.

James Riley Mike Cannon-Brookes πŸ‘¨πŸΌβ€πŸ’»πŸ§’πŸ‡¦πŸ‡Ί Caitlin Fitzsimmons πŸ§œβ€β™€οΈ How - specifically - does Google appropriate news content?

Here's a screenshot of Google News, and for a search. It displays headlines and then passes the reader to the publication if they click.

Is this appropriation in your view or is there something else I'm missing?

Nick Lothian James Riley Mike Cannon-Brookes πŸ‘¨πŸΌβ€πŸ’»πŸ§’πŸ‡¦πŸ‡Ί It's absolutely true that Google would not have a product if other entities didn't have websites. There's appropriation in the sense that Google's product is literally an index of other people's content. We just have a different to James about whether that's a problem.

Caitlin Fitzsimmons πŸ§œβ€β™€οΈ Nick Lothian Mike Cannon-Brookes πŸ‘¨πŸΌβ€πŸ’»πŸ§’πŸ‡¦πŸ‡Ί If you can't see there is a problem, you are in the wrong game. I don't claim any easy or obvious way to unpick the downside impact of the model imposed by Google, but to say there is no problem is a bit fatuous. 1/3

Caitlin Fitzsimmons πŸ§œβ€β™€οΈ Nick Lothian Mike Cannon-Brookes πŸ‘¨πŸΌβ€πŸ’»πŸ§’πŸ‡¦πŸ‡Ί All that's happened - really - is that the ACCC, the media companies and Google/Facebook have said they will sit down and look at the issue. This thread has a tech billionaire crying 'theft!' and an employee of one of the media companies 2/3

Caitlin Fitzsimmons πŸ§œβ€β™€οΈ Nick Lothian Mike Cannon-Brookes πŸ‘¨πŸΌβ€πŸ’»πŸ§’πŸ‡¦πŸ‡Ί ... saying there is 'no problem!' As someone who has built a small publishing business over five years, I beg to differ on both counts. Monopoly power is a destructive force, not a creative one.

James Riley Caitlin Fitzsimmons πŸ§œβ€β™€οΈ Nick Lothian Be careful judging others' lived experience.

Or I assume in doing so that you know I spent almost two years writing at a small, tech publication (now bankrupt) & hence am very familiar with the difficulties of small, media businesses in the online age? πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™‚οΈ
