Interested in estimating mobile species abundance using cameras? 🐠🦈🐺

In this paper from my we propose a new framework relying on a network of cameras to better estimate species abundance! 🎥🎥

Nearly 40% of reef fish species do not benefit from marine protected areas globally but rare species benefit the most

Reef fish biomass increases in MPAs, but how do individual species respond? New paper in Ecology Letters - sp. responses are variable, 40% don't benefit from protection, rare top predators and small herbivores benefit the most.

Things are not improving in the North Atlantic. The new records being set every day are crushing the previous highs set just last year.

For example, yesterday the North Atlantic SST was 20.41°C, beating last year's record 19.94°C by almost 0.5°C.

Does tweeting increase citations? We conducted an experiment with 110 tweeted papers and 440 controls, waited 3 years for citations to accumulate... and found no significant increase in citations

It's funny how things change as you go from student to postdoc to PI. Students hit the refresh button over and over to see the status of their submitted manuscript. As a PI, I couldn't care less about paper status, but I'm hitting that refresh button on Grants.Gov

The academic publishing system is broken. Early career researchers are eager for change but particularly vulnerable to the risks associated with taking action. Out today, we (ECRs at FRB) outline 10 actions researchers at all levels can take to help doi.org/10.1111/ele.14…

Out in ⁦Nature Communications⁩ we tracked the thermal affinities of marine communities across European Seas to show an unprecedented redistribution of marine life through tropicalization and deborealization AZTI 🐟 🌊 nature.com/articles/s4146…

Some advice for early-career reviewers of grants and pubs: you don’t need to include a detailed summary of the thing you are reviewing. An editor 📝 or grant manager just wants you to get to the point of what you thought with positives, negatives, and suggestions for improvement.

New paper out in Nature Communications - in the NE Atlantic, well connected marine systems are gaining in warm-affinity species while enclosed seas are losing cold-affinity species

For a while now, Laura Dee and I have been working on a guide to introduce Ecologists to causal inference tools for observational data that has problematic unobserved confounding variables lurking in the background. And now it's up as a preprint!

Do you work with traits? Would you like to create these fancy plots but they are too complex?
You can do them now (along with other analyses) with 'funspace', an R package created with Giacomo Puglielli and Nicola Pavanetto.

A complete toolbox to compute, analyze and plot functional diversity through pairwise species trait-based distances, even with missing data imputed from phylogeny
