Did you see a red dot during totality? That was a solar prominence -- a massive loop of the sun’s plasma attached to the visible surface of the sun, which can form within a day but last as long as several months scientificamerican.com/article/red-do… by Meghan Bartels on Scientific American

While I’m doing shoutouts, though, I have to applaud all my Scientific American colleagues who came together to create the best damn eclipse-centric science-news package I’ve ever seen.

a fun look at Scientific American staff, wherever the eclipse took them.

i was at the cotton bowl today in dallas, with several hundred people, including a kid celebrating his birthday and a woman who'd come from asheville as part of a new chapter in life. enjoy!

hi folks. if you are planning to leave Texas today after the eclipse, think twice. Staying in place for one more night might be safer. and if you don’t have a weather radio, consider getting one.

😎 Cloud Update:

✅The best viewing conditions are likely north of I-20
☁️It might look BAD around 9-11 am this morning, BUT we are expecting some low clouds to scatter before eclipse time.
🤞High level clouds should remain thin in many spots.

i live in a world where instead of leaving me a note, a neighbor just calls code compliance because my handyman mistakenly set out bulk trash during the wrong week. luckily i was home and able to talk to the officer so i could avoid the fine ($2000) but why WHY are we like this?
