I'm giving a talk on SciDataFlow for UCB's CompBio Skills Seminar tomorrow and discussing this figure.

In ecology ~5% of authors declined to share data, ~65% ignored the request. Only in ~30% of data requests was data shared. In social sciences, ~50% of requests were denied!

You could fix this real fast if a) every journal mandated data public upon acceptance for publication or b) universities just stopped counting publications that don't meet data transparency principles towards tenure and promotion requirements.

I get that standards and data sharing and infrastructure doesn’t sound all that exciting. I get that funders want to fund the next big discovery or cure or treatment. But if we’re to make the most out of those huge, expensive, time-consuming data sets, they need to be reusable.
