My friend teaches at a university in Paris. The other week students prevented a Jewish student from entering a class. There is too much of this in France, but at least the students were expelled.

There is no surprise that the world is a mystery to me, but even so, this 200m queue for a new Taiwanese bubble tea shop this morning does not compute. I can take a guess at Taiwan, but I really couldn’t tell you what bubble tea is, and doubt I’d queue for it.

For the record: when my father, born in Poland, was liberated from a concentration camp, two or three of the other liberated inmates returned to Poland, it had been their home, after all. They were welcomed with rocks thrown, and 'Fuck off Jews.' I won't be going there.

I gave a presentation this morning, partly about Afghanistan. On the drive home it set me thinking.

My hunch is that part of the reason for Western protests about Gaza is a total failure to understand what urban war is, and what it looks like, and people are horrified to see it.…
