This sort of thing is going to store up huge problems for the future. You’ll always need highly skilled consultant surgeons. You create them by letting *real doctors* do the simple operations many many times. What’s the benefit of this nonsense?

I know we moan a lot but it's actually great to see the NHS taking serious steps to improve doctors' working lives 👏

🚨🚨Lost for words again.

The danger that patients, like the one below, are put in when assessed by a PA instead of a doctor can lead to serious morbidity or death.

Is this what we want for our families?

Replacing doctors with PAs will be the medical scandal of this century.

A fitness to practise tribunal (MPTS) determines that a PA's history should be repeated by a doctor and a PA's examination should be repeated by a doctor too.

One lecturer at med school said that the unique thing about Doctors is the bottom-up in-depth understanding of the physiology of the normal body, what happens in disease and why it manifests how it does in our investigations, and the mechanisms of why we treat it how we do.

You get what you pay for, and make no mistake - this is a brain drain from the UK. Once they’re gone they won’t come back.

Doctors’ pay is on the left, Physician’s Assistants’ pay is on the right.

GP Partners

If this is how you are treating your PAs you are putting patients at serious risk of harm

PAs, particularly those straight from uni, are often too naive to understand how dangerous this is

Stop exploiting your staff

This is an MP attacking the basic tenets of our legal system. When politicians start telling us the judiciary are “enemies of the people”, you have a serious problem. ⬇️

🚨Patient Safety🚨

I’m not sure people really understand why doctors are up in arms about this government trying to substitute doctors

Why we think it will affect patient care?

So let me explain to you what it has taken me to train to become an NHS consultant, necessary to…

BREAKING
The senior officers of the Royal College of Physicians commissioned a survey of MRCPs’ views on physician associates (PAs). They have today released the actual findings, but the back story is shocking. I’ll link to the raw data at the end of this 🧵.

We are at the most improbable point in UK medicine, where the actual Royal College of Physicians, founded in 1518 to represent medically trained doctors, is advocating that one doesn’t need to be a physician to practice medicine.

Family member contacted my earlier as they had learnt an associate specialist was carrying out a procedure and were concerned about what I’d previously told them about PAs.

For those not in the know, an associate specialist is an experienced doctor. A PA is not a doctor at all.…
