Maybe I was naïve going in but this sort of thing shocked me as a staffer. Everywhere I looked for where the system could plausibly hold powerful people to account, I found dead ends.

What exactly does the Ethics Committee investigate? What is the process by which an investigation proceeds? I worked in the Senate for years and have no clue.

I would argue it's even more shameless, in fact. Student loans are mostly taken out by teenagers who are pressured into doing it 'for their future' before they have financial literacy. Congresspeople are grown-ass adults who (should) understand the consequences of spending money.

I think it's totally valid for Biden to point out to GOP congressmen: when it came time to pass a loan program there was a chance you might personally have to dip into, you went out of your way to create a loan forgiveness provision, but for students, you're saying fuck off.
