I see the 'AO3 should let us make money' takes are going around again, so as a copyright attorney, I'd like to again provide some information about fanfiction and fair use.

So done with this bad ao3 take, but at this point I’m down for just letting idiots like this try to make money off intellectual property they don’t own. Then ao3 should leave them out to dry when they wake up to tens of thousands of dollars of lawyer fees when Disney sues them.

This seems pretty reductionist. Is the implication that somebody’s fanfic is going to affect how people perceive something in real life? Seems like there’s a pretty clear difference in impact and reach between someone’s ao3 account with 25 subscribers and Winnie the Pooh lol
