*NYPD isn’t allowed to release mugshots unless a person poses an active threat to public safety, ie someone previously arrested currently committing acts of violence. NYPD never answers for releasing mugshots of protestors, or faces accountability for violating state law.

NYPD top heads will call for enhanced charges as a sort of punishment to protestors for NYPD deploying more resources or causing them trouble. It’s their way of retaliating, but often ends up with charges dismissed or lowered by the DA because they were absurd to begin with.
