Ministers have been cosy with landlords all along, parroting their lines (e.g. regulation->landlord exodus?) without evidence. But it's not what they say, it's what they do: 5yrs of dither, delay and now diluting the Bill are selling renters down the river

What is infuriating here is that the govt is effectively admitting that the civil justice system is in meltdown, which it is, but saying no abolition of s.21 till MoJ has sorted out an express justice boarding system especially for landlords.

No to be had: on paper the government provides it across England and Wales. In reality it is only available in a few areas and demand far exceeds capacity. It's wilful neglect, going back at least a decade.

Gov't is currently going through the motions of a Review of Civil .

One of its 4 workstreams is int'l comparisons. England & Wales do NOT compare favourably with other common law systems.

If we don't try to understand legal need, how can we hope to meet it?

Civil has already lost a third of its providers over the past decade. To lose a third of the remainder would be catastrophic for . Recruitment and retention are already at crisis point!

How do you fight inequality without ?

Choice: Gov't has wilfully neglected civil .

Result: more people in need struggle to get legal help, and more firms/charities struggle to provide it.

£11.3m is not so much: we spend 8 TIMES that on the King.

More and more new Law Centres are created by existing advice organisations committing to law practice, in order to take their services to local people much further. Here's a prime example!

'But the bigger picture is obscured both by a lack of reliable data and by claims that are either anecdotal or reek of self-interest. Much of the data that does exist runs counter to the ‘landlord exodus’ narrative.'

Don't believe the hype. Renters need better protections now.

Thinking about this new report.

Defining the issue helps gauge how serious/widespread it is.

Knowing this helps validate your own experience: it *is* a thing, it's not just me.

What's in the Bill is the bits worry about, like the grounds that mean gov't is *not* getting rid of no-fault .

What's promised but not in yet is the renter-friendly bits, like applying the Decent Homes Standard to private rented homes.

Priorities, huh? 🤔

cuts have hit some much harder than others. The policy has set back - and continues to do so as long as it remains in place!

Read this illuminating new report, to which multiple Law Centres and Law Centres Network have contributed.

I'd rather they not spend the funds if they cannot spend them well. But this isn't a 'saving', just a failure to deliver. Why has high inflation caught them by suprise? What are they doing instead to meet their aims and fight the crisis?
