Sobering to see US backing inter-city passenger rail in way that feels impossible in Britain right now. It isn't sum of money that stands out as much as rhetoric: US politicians believe Americans want more+better rail. UK pols think Brits want less! railwaygazette.com/us-government-…

Another week, another rail project abroad that damns UK's paucity of ambition. No way a project as fraught as Pajares (50 km line u/construction since 2004!) wld've been completed in Britain. Trans-Pennine base tunnel surely simple in comparison... bit.ly/3NbDrqv

One hundred years later and what has changed?

'The desire and need for rail travel, and shifting modes of working, have not diminished demand across the country. The opposite is true.' Great analysis of latest ORR usage stats from John Bull and London Reconnections londonreconnections.com/2023/the-state…

Stat of the day: 'TransPennine Express currently costs £500m a year to operate but receives only around £250m in farebox income' (IIRC it was a much closer gap pre-Covid) bit.ly/3FxYXl7

Powerful review of from Andrew Adonis. Depressing need to reiterate that HS2's specs were not out of line with international standards: France, Italy, Japan and China either do or are looking to operate HSR at 320km/h+, necessitating c400km/h infra design

Imagine having the gall to run with the slogan ‘long-term decisions for a brighter future’ and then scrap the only nationally transformative piece of future-proof infrastructure this country has committed to build in half a century to try to win a few extra votes next year.

'The railway company best placed to level up in terms of connecting the whole of Britain is us' says CrossCountry Trains MD Tom Joyner in a wide-ranging interview about an operator that is arguably the bellwether for the overall state of Britain's railways⤵️bit.ly/407CDIu

Good description of the extensive work and scrutiny that went into the HS2 legislation - I have not seen any analysis of the time, effort and contributions of experts, that went into the act of vandalism announced by the PM In Manchester.

‘Build it and they’’ll come’ has been true of so many UK public transport projects. In fact the Tories accept it as true of roads, but for some reason defy history and stats for other modes in their positions.

A potentially very exciting development for rail connectivity between the UK and Europe. IMHO Eurostar would benefit from a competitor...but long way to go to bring new entrant to fruition

Lovely piece this, but I seem to recall scores of UK MSM pieces decrying Spain's HSR network as a 'white elephant' when case for was being built in 2010-15. We needed this story then, now it is almost certainly too late 🙄

Everyone's working from home, so we don't need to invest in rail infrastructure. Meanwhile there are still 28 flights from Glasgow Airport to London airports a day! completely fails Scotland and the The SNP Scottish Labour should be furious.

Thanks Alstom UK & Ireland Angel Trains and Avanti West Coast for a great visit. Good to see (sometimes unfairly maligned) Pendolinos getting some love. Fleet has run up 305 million miles in service in 21 years, and it might need to do the same again...

“Few groups have been more coddled over the decades than drivers. To take one obvious example, fuel duty has been frozen for 13 years, at a cost to the Treasury of around £80bn ($98bn), almost as much as the price of a high-speed train line.”
