One of the better films I’ve seen in recent years. If there was ever a movie Italians should see about immigration this is it. I have to wonder how much screening it will get in Italy, though, considering it’s mostly in Wolof and barely contains a word of Italian beyond the title

In my first permanent continuing academic post way back when I could count book reviews as scholarship. They are, and I still do them sometimes. Here’s one on a great book on narratives of motherhood academic.oup.com/cww/advance-ar…

'Marine Le Pen weighed in, denying Ms Nakamura’s fitness for Olympics role and ridiculing her lyrics, which deploy the argot typical of the Parisian suburb where she grew up. “ she doesn’t sing French,”  Le Pen said. Better than your drivel, Marine theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

Plenty of cheer this Paddy's day but my mind is back in a Yonkers bar c.2006 plastered in signs reading 'For St Paddy's day give us green cards rather than green beer'. And I'm not even a migrant any more

From my uni today 'Today is University Mental Health Day. Did you know that one in four people will experience mental health of some kind each year in England?'. Well, I should jolly well think so: what of the other three? Get your language right on something important as this.

Happy to see a positive review of my book in the last issue of the French Review. I only came across it today but boy did I need it today! Nice to see so many books still getting reviewed too…

It’s not surprising to read a book closely again after 25 years and find it more moving but this one (on the syllabus of a class I have inherited) almost pushed me to tears. Wow waaw waaw

Overheard in a Cardiff pub this afternoon (as I was admittedly watching a match while assiduously eavesdropping on a conversation in Wenglish: 'Pel-droed. Mae'n f@@@ing crap, inni'! Translanguaging lives!

I was excited to read this new book for our French Australian literature project, so am quite disappointed at its denouement, but not as much as the author who discovered the uncle was a bagnard! Great to read for anyone interested in life writing

Bristol University’s loss is University of Bath gain! Although I don’t think the wife will miss me finding a way to reference the dart player’s theme tune every single time she mentions this fellow’s name gw4.ac.uk/news/professor…

Of course someone recently published an excellent book on Carpentier, and a revised doctorate no less! I will find another academic combat sports book topic, and have a fair bit on my plate for now as it is. Congratulations to Hadjeras, hélas …

Talking of life and writing, this came today and I’m really looking forward to co-writing a book for the first time! It sure helps that it’s with Natalie Edwards Prof Natalie Edwards of @BristolFrench

I don’t often post about deaths here (I get plenty of that elsewhere at my age) but sad to see this fella go. He was so much more than a 'Peaky Blinders star ' and I reckon I introduced his dub poetry to students across three continents. RIP bbc.co.uk/news/entertain…
