What a unique and powerful experience to have made this film with Rainbow Collective 💚 & Jess Pandian. I’ll never forget interviewing the inspiring people who are pivotal to this history of struggle.

1976-1981 Britain's Asian community stood tall against Far-Right violence & a rising tide of racist murders. lifts the lid on Southall protests, the killing of Blair Peach, the Battle for Brick Lane, & how ‘self-defence is no offence’ became Bradford's rallying call.

'This was a project to support young Black students going into the study of history. It was a space created for us. Through this space, we were able to do things we would not have ordinarily imagined for ourselves.'

As Women's History Month draws to a close, at YHP we celebrate the trailblazing activism of Black women who have been central to so much of our history in Britain 🧵✊🏿

Many thanks to Johny Pitts, Hayward Gallery Herbert Art Gallery & Museum! This exhibition renders working class photographic practices in generative and nuanced manners, check it out! Making a contribution to this group exhibition has been mad inspiring, as I continue to develop my practices.

unpopular take but 800k for <niche humanities project> looks bizarre because it *is* bizarre, and comes from treating hums like STEM, i.e. concentrating funds on a small % of research 'teams' to address narrow questions over multiple years, while most hums research gets /nothing/

A friend moved to Britain in April 1962 from British Guiana on a CUKC passport. In May 1962 he was handed this newsletter, the psychological impact of which was long lasting. He stayed in the UK but couldn’t bring himself to register as British post BG’s independence.

His son wanted to be a doctor, but was killed on his London council estate. So Richard Taylor set up the Damilola Taylor Trust, which provided financial support + access to medicine for POC/working class students from London. A tireless advocate of social justice and reform. RIP

📍Looking forward to talking about my PhD research at CRoLAC research seminar next Tuesday at 12pm at QMUL.

I will specifically thinking through my methodology and sharing some of the initial findings of the oral histories I have done so far.

Over half of Black children, and 47% of Asian children are living in poverty.

Utterly shocking in 2024 Britain, and inexcusable. This is a political choice.

Many thanks to University of York History Department for inviting me back to deliver a public history masterclass! We discussed methods to develop an ethical oral history practice: a journey I began while studying at York. It was a joy to share what I’ve learned since with current students 🫶🏽
