Extraordinary moment this morning (8.23) when Nick Robinson tells Suella Braverman, “…you’ve attacked the homeless, you’ve attacked migrants as being part of an invasion. Isn’t the truth that you’re a headline grabber who does it by spreading poison even within your own party?”

The Rwanda scheme was obviously intended to put ‘clear blue water’ between the Tories and Labour. But it turns out it’s actually flowing through the middle of the Conservative Party.

Given reports that Birmingham was warned not to host the Games (independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-n…) and to focus instead on solving its financial problems - which turned out to be extremely severe - I think we deserve to know more about the role of the Palace in all this.

In 2017, when the Commonwealth Games had to find a host, “The Palace went to the government and said: ‘It’s the Queen’s jubilee in 2022, you need to do something’.. UK Sport also then got a call. There was genuine pressure and that made Birmingham happen.”theguardian.com/sport/2023/dec…

I published this piece in April 2022, concluding that 'like almost everything else the prime minister [Boris Johnson] touches [the Rwanda scheme] is likely to reflect badly on everyone involved.' I'm not inclined to eat my words.

‘Australia’s Gold Coast has dropped its bid to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games… The future of the Games more broadly remains up in the air, with Canada’s Alberta province also withdrawing its support for a bid for the 2030 event.’independent.co.uk/sport/commonwe…

Top consumer tip: if you spend millions of pounds buying something that turns out to be completely useless, it’s always worth paying the manufacturers a few million more in the hope they’ll put things right.

Nick Cave's new tribute to Shane MacGowan, which doubles as a tribute to Sinéad O'Connor (from his newsletter, doesn't seem to be linkable yet)

'A beautiful and damaged man, who embodied a kind of purity and innocence and generosity and spiritual intelligence unlike any other.'

It's the end of an era here at as we say goodbye to our incredible director, Paul Seaward, whose support, humour and encyclopaedic knowledge of the history of parliament will be greatly missed. We wish him luck and look forward to seeing his new projects come to fruition!
