Very sad to have missed this course by just a year, but excited for many more Vanderbilt School of Medicine students to learn about reasoning and epistemology from such excellent teachers!

Grateful to have been able to be a part of this panel and, even more, to have learned from WesElyMD, Evelyn Patterson , Project Return about how both to affirm dignity and provide care attuned to the structural harms our incarcerated patients live through.

Thrilled to have been able to learn from the inimitable Sarah Kliff in our Vanderbilt School of Medicine health policy course today. In medical training, we need to learn more about the ways our patients actually experience care, which is the focus of her powerful & startling reporting, like this:

This is a really thoughtful thread that grapples with uncertainty and with patients’ experience of pain—in all I want to keep these reflections in mind for this next year as an intern (and well beyond!)

Knowing how to respond to our patients’ is critical to providing care that will actually be beneficial. needs to reframe and center social medicine training as skills-building, not just as add-on content for discussion groups or stand-alone lectures.

When I was a resident, Dr. Goldfrank would ask us the same question on every patient we saw:

'What is the lesion in the healthcare system that brought this patient to us today?'

It was a challenge to look deeper into the root cause of emergencies

A vital thread. By relying on “race-neutral” policy decisions, we, at best, fail to take disparities seriously, and at worst (which is often) exacerbate existing inequities.

Because and are having conversations about how have a more anti-racist curriculum, I'm re-posting a paper myself and other medical students wrote recently about this exact issue.

Delighted to see JAMA devoting an entire issue to A Piece of My Mind, and including “To Isaiah,” by Don Berwick. I keep it on a bulletin board above my desk and re-read it nearly monthly as a reminder of the duties our society requires of us.
