Very sad to have missed this course by just a year, but excited for many more Vanderbilt School of Medicine students to learn about reasoning and epistemology from such excellent teachers!

This is a really thoughtful thread that grapples with uncertainty and with patients’ experience of pain—in all I want to keep these reflections in mind for this next year as an intern (and well beyond!)

Knowing how to respond to our patients’ #SDOH is critical to providing care that will actually be beneficial. #MedEd needs to reframe and center social medicine training as skills-building, not just as add-on content for discussion groups or stand-alone lectures.

When I was a resident, Dr. Goldfrank would ask us the same question on every patient we saw:

'What is the lesion in the healthcare system that brought this patient to us today?'

It was a challenge to look deeper into the root cause of emergencies

A vital thread. By relying on “race-neutral” policy decisions, we, at best, fail to take disparities seriously, and at worst (which is often) exacerbate existing inequities.

Delighted to see JAMA devoting an entire issue to A Piece of My Mind, and including “To Isaiah,” by Don Berwick. I keep it on a bulletin board above my desk and re-read it nearly monthly as a reminder of the duties our society requires of us.
