I'll join All Things Considered live Thursday afternoon to bring the voices from this watershed moment in the legal reckoning over the #opioid crisis and the alleged role in the epidemic played by Purdue Pharma and members of the Sackler family /end NPR

So this is the context for tomorrow's testimony by victims of the #opioidcrisis . Companies are paying tens of billions of dollars. In exchange they will move on with a clean slate from a public health crisis that's hit young people especially with catastrophic harm. 6/

This moment with the Sacklers comes on the heels of a much larger $26b settlement with 4 other Big Pharma players where it's worth noting there were also no admissions of wrongdoing and no charges or financial pain for company executives 5/

But there are still questions about this deal being raised by powerful interests. The bankruptcy watchdog division of the DOJ says it's unclear whether a bankruptcy court has the authority to grant this legal clean state to the Sacklers pending review by the Second Circuit 3/

A growing number of lawmakers have also called on the DOJ to launch a criminal probe of the Sacklers. So far there's no indication AG Garland plans to take on what legal scholars tell me would be a complicated fight, muddled by the government's own regulatory failures 4/

Testimony by victims of Oxycontin on Thursday in federal bankruptcy court will be symbolic. It won't affect the deal now nearing approval where the Sacklers will pay roughly $6billion in exchange for immunity from #opioidcrisis lawsuits while admitting no wrongdoing 2/ NPR

It’s good to see some of our oldest institutions finally taking steps to remove the Sackler name. The unsung heroes in these institutions are often students and staff members who have petitioned for years. Shout out to them!
