AV8 Jimmy Stewart was a bonified WW2 pilot, and hero. What you see in that GIF, where Stewart's character is losing it, wasn't all acting. He came out of the war with what we would now call PTSD (shell shock). He is reliving that on screen; that is why those scenes seem so real.
