Calling all ECRs: could you be lucky 19?

Applications are open for the 19th annual Sociological Review Fellowship. Via a one-year funded post at Keele University, a recent PhD will receive support to turn doctoral research into a book-length publication. buff.ly/4aRpVSv

Higher education blues! Feel so sad for friends and colleagues at Goldsmiths - there is a longer historic aspect to this tragedy about the legacy of community education but also the signal it sends through the whole sector. theguardian.com/education/2024…

With currently on our TV screens, I thought it be a poignant time to reshare this story covering the racially motivated murder of Satnam Singh Gill, in my home town, Coventry, in 1980.

Really moving to hear from the family of Gurdip Singh Chaggar in

48 years later and hopefully the story of Chaggar and what happened after his horrific murder will become widely known history.

Obviously this isn't important but the organisers have asked me to plug this soooo...
I'm giving a talk next week on wavelengths and geopoetics and a neighbourhood called radio in beloved Athens and the city as a song sung across the sea. Please come!

All universities. The position of university bosses is untenable. To think you can have multimillion investments in arms companies and not be complicit is untenable

Any of these people who banged the war gong for genocide in Gaza who are about to u-turn and act like they did nothing wrong can go to hell. I’m so serious, none of that “at least you saw the light eventually” redemption they should never know peace again, only shame

It feels glib to say that after months of massacre effectively being live-streamed, an ICJ ruling, images of dismembered Gazans and crushed bodies, it only took the death toll rising to over 30,000 and 3 British aid workers being killed for something to finally properly shift.

It has been one of the most maddening and disorienting experiences of my life to see this move from a proscribed “fringe” belief to leading mainstream editorial position.

“Full accountability” includes you and your colleagues standing trial for vocally giving Israel a carte blanche to commit such atrocities

a British aid worker has been killed by Israel, and Labour will not even commit to stop supplying the weapons that killed them. They then go further to actually defend Israel’s actions as “within international law”.

Every time I think they can’t sink any lower, they do.

This is a war on civilians.

On doctors trying to save lives.

On aid workers trying to feed Palestinians.

On teachers trying to put a smile on the faces of children.

This is a war on humanity — and our government should never be forgiven for its contemptible complicity.

Funny how this article omits that UK unis were publicly funded before the introduction of fees. Like most universities in Europe, which, you know, don't fire their staff, because they don't need to overcharge foreign students to survive theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

Like many, we are urging HOME to be more transparent around their recent decision to cancel the event ‘Voices of Resilience’, and we share the view of many, that it is in no way politically neutral to cancel such an event.

As racialised people, our lives are political,
