We interviewed NASA Astrophysics Division Director Mark Clampin on the state of the division given the lean budget for FY24 and FY25. We discuss NASA's goals for the future and the status of ongoing missions such as NASAHubble and Chandra Observatory

The You're Wrong About... episodes about the OJ Simpson trial were so eye opening, showing how violent and abusive Simpson was in his marriage, and how well known this was in their families and social circles. Just awful. The first of many episodes is here podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/you…

Great thoughts from Laurie Leshin. Never trash other missions, don’t fight inward even amid really tough budgets. The entire SMD portfolio is worth advocating for, with huge societal+technological ROI. NASA Science repays the nation & taxpayer by many multiples in many ways.

Awesome colloquium on star-planet interactions by evgenya shkolnik! Got to keep an eye on the UV - crazy to think you can have a flare on an M dwarf that increases the flux from the star by 14000 times in the UV but only an order of magnitude in optical

Do you want to see 30 years of progress in astronomy? On the left is the iconic 1995 Hubble Deep Field. On the right is (a portion of) the 2024 JADES GOODS-N Field, focusing on the same region, but going significantly deeper. It's an insane triumph of technology and effort.

The Webb Telescope is one of the most incredible things ever built. But it’s only as good as the scientists that get to use it.

We’ve spent two years following 2 teams as they became some of the first scientists to ever work with Webb. Thrilled their stories will air on Sunday!

Shane: 'What is the most important trait for becoming a successful academic?'

Danny: 'The ability to exaggerate the importance of your research.'

Setting aside the whole question of β€œmaybe it is ok to have a transcendent moment even if it impacts β€˜productivity’?”, I note that $700M is a very small amount of money for the US, about $2/person.

As some others have already pointed out, these prices were there before open access; they were just baked into subscriptions. The second best thing OA did was to make these numbers evident to everyone, not just to the libraries footing the bill.

Want to change the system? Post preprints and only post preprints - don't submit to journals, don't subscribe to journals, don't read journals - only hire and fund people based on their preprints.
