TIL that Harold Wilson tried to remove the 'e' from Concorde and, rather predictably, that the Treasury tried to cancel the entire project.

This is the scariest thing I have seen. This appears completely real, and it is completely fake. I genuinely do not know how we will tell reality from the fakes that will be everywhere.

NEW: analysis of millions of books published over the centuries suggests western society is shifting away from a culture of progress, and towards one of caution, worry and risk-aversion.

I think this is one of the most important challenges facing us today.

Interesting piece here. I think a culture of optimism and 'solutionism' – as I define it, the idea that most problems can be solved through human ingenuity – is incredibly valuable, and like many others I am trying to do what I can to reinforce it.

Why? We've got more savings (to earn interest on) and less debt (to pay interest on) than we used to. Plus the savings boost has arrived quicker than the mortgage pain (because of fixed term mortgages)

For the 50th anniversary of Centre for Policy Studies and 10th of CapX, we're republishing pieces from our archive - starting with Sir Keith Joseph's foreword to the CPS' first report.

We've blown the dust off the pamphlet, but the ideas are as necessary as ever 🧵
