Black-bellied Dipper at Burn of Lunklet this afternoon. Nice to get off the mark finding a BB rarity so early in the year, although that's probably me peaked for the year already

Finding this Olive-backed Pipit at Voe this afternoon was an unexpected treat whilst eating a massive bag of cheese and onion crisps for my lunch

The sea at Mavis Grind was flatter than a flat pancake this morning. A Little Auk and a leaping Common Dolphin were both good fun

This Bluethroat spent the best part of two weeks at Bakkasetter recently. It would regularly come for its afternoon bath in a puddle outside our kitchen window. A fine little bird

A tremendous Shetland autumn day. Found a Firecrest and 2 Coal Tits in the morning, saw a first for Britain at lunchtime and then bumbled into this lovely Coues's Arctic Redpoll in North Nesting late on

I've been trying to attract Red Sword-grass to sugar at Bakkasetter in recent autumns, with zero success. Last night, however, a Sword-grass paid a visit - even better! A fantastic moth. Fewer than 15 Shetland records and only the second since 2011

My contribution to the current Nearctic vagrant madness was sadly not a gaudy American wood warbler; however, any day that you find a Pec Sand is a good day. Noss Farm, Spiggie today

The endemic Black-capped Speirops is one of the commonest birds on Sao Tome. It is also the best looking

A Sao Tome Shorttail in the gloom and a Sao Tome Scops Owl looking in the wrong direction. From a wet and muddy Monte Carmo in the south of Sao Tome

Monte Carmo in the south of Sao Tome was a very wet and muddy challenge but with great rewards, including Sao Tome Grosbeak, Scops Owl and Shorttail. Best of all, I thought, were Sao Tome Ibis and the fantastic Sao Tome Fiscal

Sao Tome is somewhere I've long wanted to go to but never thought I'd actually visit. But here I am... Looking forward to some endemic-filled forests....

Intolerant human: There's no way I can live alongside nature. I must cover the pier in bright yellow tape to stop these horrible terns from nesting.

Arctic Tern: Whatever.

Pleased with this moth trapped at Bakkasetter last night: Pediasia aridella, only the second for Shetland (first was in 1996). It's almost certainly come from Scandinavia!

I had to do a proper emergency stop when I bumped into this beauty next to the road this evening: Woodchat Shrike at Bigton
