I've been talking with a bunch of people (and am one myself) who all have a particular set of skills but whose job titles are all over the place. I think that set of skills and the need for this position aren't random β€” but it needs a name. berjon.com/chimeralogist/

They are saying it out loud because they believe that politicians are sufficiently captured that they can push that way.

They may not be wrong.

Thought experiment: how hard would it be to implement ActivityPub over ATProto? The answer might surprise you!

Trust has been the defining constraint on the Web's evolution towards more powerful, more applicative capabilities. Could we get more power using a primitive that places more stringent constraints in what pages can do? (Next Web series #4)

Browsers are hugely load-bearing in the Web's architecture, and yet they haven't changed very much in quite a while. If the Web is indeed for user agency, we should take a hard look at our user agents to see if they might not need improvement.

Excellent discussion around philosophy & ethics relating to tech (firmly grounded in practice) from Robin Berjon | πŸ¦‹ robin.berjon.com. Surprise, it's not focused on AI ! (But I reckon the core arguments are important in this context too).

Have you ever wondered what the Web is for? Well, if we're going to build a better one, it might be worth spending a moment considering the question. This is the second installment in my series on building a better web.

If you're looking for a manifesto that's about making the real world better for people (as opposed to, you know, trying to make sociopathy acceptable), I would humbly suggest this:

This is the kick-off post in a series in which I'm going to explore things that we could change about the Web. I look forward to being wrong in public a lot, hopefully in useful ways!

If we follow each other, dm me if you'd like to try the social network named after weather with no clouds. Which one can't say out loud here. Which is proof we're in the dumbest timeline.

Google testified in court today that click data does not matter to search.

I take it this means that we can now remove the ping attribute from HTML?

I recommend this piece from Robin on the broken search engine marketplace.
As usual with Robin’s writing:
1. I really enjoyed it
2. Some bits felt too extreme or like they underplay the value Google creates
3. But overall, it felt rather convincing

Even for The Economist, this is truly crazy. Not just crazy, but ignorant in the extreme. Who is pushing this rubbish? Don’t you do any basic fact finding, speak to anyone other than Google? 1/
