Despite Nova Scotia's diminutive size, the waters surrounding the province have some 3,800 islands—the mainland itself would be an island if not for a narrow isthmus linking it to NB. A misty aura cloaks islands in mystique, stirring imagination.

As a resident of Boston and Cape Cod in the early 1970s, Judith Merrill was deeply into the alternative scene: natural foods, meditation, acupressure, astrology. But she left all that behind and moved to PEI.

JAMES HOLMAN is known as the “Father of Tourism” on Prince Edward Island. A Saint John, NB, native, he went to the Island in 1851, and like many other visitors, was smitten by its laid-back lifestyle, rural charm, and sea vistas.

“It’s the beer most likely to incite riots at beer festivals.” Jeremy White of Big Spruce Brewing is talking about a pink, fizzy drink he has set before me. I’m in his tasting room on a hillside in Nyanza, Cape Breton, sampling what is supposed to be beer.

April and May bring special opportunities for outdoor encounters with newly arrived, migrating birds. Weary after long flights, and easier to see before buds unfold to become leaves, these little feather balls arrive from their wintering grounds.
