Love from Manenberg. My South African friends will like this intimate & very beautiful project. The result of a ten-year collaboration between Sarah Stacke & the township's people. Manenberg without the cliches & instead with love. Redi Tlhabi Trevor Noah kickstarter.com/projects/13377…

I love this project so much, the tremendously moving result of a deeply personal ten-year commitment. I've been watching it from the beginning & have seen the sweat & tears & joy that has gone into it. I feel honored to have pledged.
👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾, Sarah Stacke! kickstarter.com/projects/13377…

Researching the lives of people in the Holsinger Studio's portraits makes us feel like we know them. So learning about misfortunes like an early death can sadden us. The Reverend John Osborn Seay was only 44 when he died, less than two years after he commissioned this portrait.

The portraits in that screenshot are by Hugh Mangum, a late-19th & early-20th C. photographer who worked in NC, VA, & WVA. He was white; his clientele came from all races & classes. But what made him virtually unique is the visible fun he allowed his customers to have.

My entire TL is praising the essays in the The New York Times Juneteenth package. It's true. They're great.
But I'd like to give a shoutout to the brilliant photo editing. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾, Beth Bristow, Anika Burgess, Nakyung Han, Eve Lyons, & JuliAnna Patino.
