A magical Orkney spring dawn, windy and sunny. Geese were on the move, a Short Eared Owl surveyed the rushes from its fence post and Brown Hare's grazed quietly in the wide open fields. I saw my first spring migrant too, a beautiful male Wheatear, what a journey he's had!

The mesmerising spectacle of thousands of Guillemots descending off the ledges of Hornøya as a White-tailed Eagle soars over the island.

The sheer numbers of auks here on Hornøya is just mind blowing and tbh, actually quite overwhelming. Truly epic. I can’t help but imagine that this was how our UK colonies might have looked a couple of hundred years ago.

A couple of Vardo/Hornoya BOC highlights from yesterday. Bruini’s and Willow Grouse. Our last day today- can’t believe that a week nearly over! Already looking forward to our return next year.

Common Guillemot colony, Hornøya. Even if I wrote a thousand words, I couldn’t do justice to how mind blowing it is. Atlantic Puffin on snow was the headline act for most, but it is the sheer numbers of seabirds in the Arctic seascape & confiding nature that really got me.

Walking through Helsinki Airport and had to double take as I heard the sweet sound of Rosefinch in song as we walked through this. Love it. 🇫🇮
