Sickle cell disease is one of the most common genetic disorders, affecting millions worldwide.

Sickle cell disease can affect any race or ethnicity, but most commonly affects people of black or African descent.

There are only 4 U.S. FDA approved drug therapies for #sicklecell disease. Their target is to slow down the damage and progression of the condition.

A cause for pain in #sicklecell disease are the sickle red blood cells that causes blockage in small blood vessels. This is called vaso-occlusive crisis or pain crisis. The blockage prevents red blood cells from delivering oxygen. #WorldSickleCellDay #sicklecell 101 #juneteenth

Red blood cells in people living w/ #sicklecell disease (SCD) are not very durable and break down faster than typical red blood cells, which live for about 120 days.
