My colleague & friend, the great labor historian Prof. Annelise Orleck. Annelise is out & ok, but was told that a condition of her release is being banned from campus, despite currently teaching two courses.

I'm so heartened to see faculty stand with student protesters like this.

Reminder of the true meaning of May Day

So tired of people opining about the history of student protest who clearly have no idea what they're talking about. Read a book! Even better, read several--and not only about white student activists in the 1960s!

In each case, reactionaries moaned that students were indoctrinated by Marxist profs. In reality, students were meeting & studying alongside people unlike themselves, with diverse experiences & opinions, & growing more knowledgeable & empathetic. Exactly what education should do!

Student protesters were right about segregation in the early '60s, right about Vietnam in the late '60s, right about apartheid in the '80s, right about Iraq in 2003, and right about wealth inequality in 2011. Seems generally bad to side against student movements.

Schools should be schools. It should not be controversial to argue that students and their learning ought to take precedence over billionaires, real estate investments, and endowments.

The universities are beholden to donors like Cooperman, Bill Ackman, and the Huntsman family, all of whom have wielded their financial support as leverage to force college administrations to crack down on student activism. thedailybeast.com/colleges-shoul…
