The more I do my own research and dig into secondary source citations, the more I learn that sometimes citations simply don't back up the claim the secondary source is making.

I would put this differently: in practice, beliefs and ideologies, including our own, don't really have internal cohesion in an intellectual sense. Beliefs cohere around desires and interests, which may conflict. Consistency has to be actively constructed, or not.
