This is interesting drawing on the IFS study I tweeted about.

Couple of thoughts:

1. This is one of the first of a series of studies using this data. Universities should prepare for not just university level analysis, but analysis of individual courses.

A thing that I keep seeing in organizations I talk to: a few senior people are experimenting with AI in their work and realizing that this is going to be a huge deal in their industry.... yet they have huge trouble getting their colleagues to even try the systems out seriously.

The crazy thing about the shambolic UK economy is they're at or near the leading edge on stuff like AI and pharmaceutical innovation.

It's an advanced society immiserating itself with bad land use policy and inadequate infrastructure.

A small positive progress step I’ve noticed recently: increasingly products are packaged in boxes that have no glue or staples or tape and just fold cleverly. Must make recycling easier.

my pet theory is that this rejection of trickster behavior is an organic solution to the problem that

1) you want to have a few people acting this way

2) but the rewards for doing so are large

3) if you have a large number of people acting this way, your society falls apart

I just pushed a new working paper: “Industrial Organization and The Rise of Market Power.” It's a literature review in two parts: (1) De Loecker et al (2020 QJE) [“DLEU”] and surrounding research, and (2) IO studies on specific industries over long time horizons.

Are patents a good measure of innovation?

One way to answer: do papers that investigate similar phenomena, some with patent and some with non-patent data, converge on similar results?

If yes, suggests patent data is as good a measure as alternatives, when used appropriately.
