📰NEWS: $16 million from U.S. Department of Energy is headed to California's Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory to establish a fusion energy hub.

As a mechanical engineer, I know first hand the potential fusion energy represents in our efforts to produce widespread clean, dependable energy.

The right kind of trolling. 1/3 of replies go along with the joke, 1/3 offer constructive alternative washing advice, 1/3 warn people not to be taken in by the post.

Yesterday morning's rainbow was the most I've ever seen against a blue sky. Very strange! And it wasn't particularly windy. Somehow the raindrops drifted far enough over toward us from a wall of cloud that the arc extended far out in front of the clouds.

For those attending COP (or following the coverage) here are my favorite 10 cliché, platitudes, talking points, and overused, yet meaningless phrases.

They have all already been used countless times at COP28.

I hope these are useful in navigating the climate genre for you.…

Asking ChatGPT to repeat words 'forever' is now against OpenAI's terms of service, after Google researchers showed that doing so led it to reveal training data (Jason Koebler / 404 Media)

Not sure how these snowy egrets keep their plumage so clean as they traipse through the muck. Much of the gloop sloughed right off its lovely yellow feet, which are by the way the best way to ID these birds. Saw this one today at Baylands Nature Preserve, Palo Alto, Calif.

Everyone dinging Google Photos for shots that don't reflect a single moment (not an unfair worry IMO, but a human must actively choose to generate it), note how iPhone HDR compositing wiped out the head of this jogger. My deep dive into the nuances: cnet.com/tech/mobile/fe…

The use of 'massive' here amuses me but fusion is a demonstration of E=mc2so it's actually on point.

'Whyte’s passion has always been for fusion — the process by which light elements combine to form heavier ones, releasing massive amounts of energy.'

Apple adopting RCS in 2024 -- before regulators force the issue -- is a smart move. I expect that in heavy iPhone markets like the U.S., iMessage will remain predominant, and social pressure among teens for iPhones will be undiminished.

Getting lots of PR pitches along the lines of 'Upgrade Your Haircare Game...' I wonder what database got confused about the kinds of things I report on?

Sigma has a new 70-200mm f2.8 Sports lens. Looks solid. $1500, for mirrorless Sony & Leica cameras. I like Sigma — an earlier 70-200 was my introduction to the company, and 35mm f1.4 is great. Too bad Canon hasn't opened up RF lens mount to 3rd parties. sigma-global.com/en/lenses/s023…
