⚠️ rgdal, rgeos, and maptools won’t be available on CRAN after October 2023. ⚠️

What are the consequences of this change? What do you need to do as a user and as a developer?

This is a statement from two of the people who wrote Florida's new education standards on slavery. In it they give several names of people to exemplify slaves who learned skills they applied later in life.

Let's go through the supposed truth of this list one by one.

For the 1st time in an already-record-smashing year, the average sea surface temperature in the North Atlantic has exceeded +4 standard deviations (relative to 1991-2020). The actual anomaly is +1.34°C (2.4°F), a HUGE number averaged over 38 million km² (15 million mi²) of ocean.

NEW: 85 people in Arizona suffered severe burns from contact with pavements heated up to 180F (82C). 7 of them died. In total, 257 people had underlying cause of death listed as 'exposure to excessive natural heat'.

This is not a forecast for 50 years time, it’s happening today.

It was a visit to Phoenix on a 115 F day that inspired the opening paragraph of my new book The Heat Will Kill You First:

'When heat comes, it’s invisible. It doesn’t bend tree branches or blow hair across your face to let you know it’s arrived. The ground doesn’t shake.' 1/3

Fringe psychologist and scientific racist Richard Lynn has died.
I expect there will be much analysis of his pernicious influence on science and culture more broadly, especially from the small but vocal fringe group of obsessive Mankind Quarterly fans.

Hell, MTG JUST lambasted both FDR and LBJ for helping to create and institutionalize our welfare state. Like, what the hell do these folks even think?

Also, JFK started the moves towards moving federal power behind desegregation…that would place him in the ranks of a red-mouthed socialist by today’s standards…
