Every year, depending on my location and timing, I try to spend at least one full day searching for large salamanders. It is very rewarding to see them since they stay hidden for most of the year. I saw quite a few Jefferson salamanders (Ambystoma jeffersonianum) yesterday!

This little cutie is a California tiger salamander (Ambystoma californiense)—one of two endangered species that reside at La Purisima Conservation Bank in Lompoc. These important salamanders keep herbivorous insects in check, and cycle important nutrients back into the soil.
