Ambulance stuck in traffic, part 100. Hard to imagine a more dysfunctional transportation system than one that centers private vehicles! The defenders of this system just accept this as the cost of doing business. Or maybe we just need one more lane?

News flash: we need infrastructure to keep us safe, not just PPE. Also a great demonstration of how car-centrism and motornormativity literally hurt and kill people. This is what toxic car culture looks like.

New normal got me feeling kinda depressed. There's something truly dystopian about climate change smoke blanketing the world while human activity is just business as usual outside.

Car Dependency Index Andrew Single I'm pretty sure that it will change . But Winnipeg has bad roads , and bad Transit . And crappy bike lanes . Getting around on an E bike might be ok when you're younger for 7 months of the year , or a bicycle . But when you get old and sore , you'll be stuck at home .

Let me get this straight πŸ€”

🌏 It combats climate change
🚘 It solves congestion
πŸ’³ It saves us money
πŸ₯ It improves public health
πŸ’΄ It helps local businesses
🚭 It cleans the air

... and we have to *campaign* for it?? Like. Lol πŸ€ͺ

City of Winnipeg what you are piloting to see its impact has already been proven in many places. Lets get on with reducing speeds on our residential streets and make them for people, not just cars. Safe Speeds Winnipeg

We don't need to pilot or do a million surveys on safe, sustainable urban design. We know it works because there's already tons of data on it. We're not that special, and a little humility would go a long way.

Car Dependency Index Andrew Single Those intersections predate the automobile . Occasionally I'll browse the old Winnipeg Tribune . In the early days people were getting rundown by streetcars and wagons , and then automobiles . The idea that people are going to get around on scooters is dumb .

New study on bike helmets has some shocking findings:

⛑️ Cyclist with helmets are seen as less human
🦺 Cyclists wearing safety vests as least human
😱 Dehumanization leads to being discounted, ignored, mistreated, or deliberately harmed

Oh, City of Winnipeg. Why were the car lanes made wider on the Osborne Bridge? The shoulder was the last vestige of space for cyclists on the busy connection between downtown and the Village. Now they have to fight for space with cars in the lane itself.

Centring cars is largely what makes our cities loud, polluted, dangerous, and covered in so much sprawling asphalt that we can’t afford to maintain it.

It doesn't need to be this way. Car Dependency Index

a I've seen a vid of a crowd of thousands of people parting in seconds for an emergency vehicle. Meanwhile one car can block the ambulance

Presenting a collection of some of the most notorious cars ever made in automotive history. It's astonishing how these vehicles turned out so poorly, but even more surprising is how long they managed to stay on the market.

Andrew Single It's generous to say infrastructure is designed to be safe to drivers at the expense of people outside vehicles. I think it's more like: infrastructure is designed to save drivers a few seconds on their commute at the expense of the safety and lives of people outside vehicles.

Hey City of Winnipeg. Was just out for a bike ride & stopped by the public washrooms at Central Park but they are all closed. Plus they had a sign that says they not for β€œthe general public”. Who are the public washrooms for?
