Thinking of brilliant writer-friend Paul Auster whom I’d first met as a colleague at Princeton. Paul did not seem to like teaching creative writing but he much enjoyed the company of young writers & encouraged many.

Paul Schrader is such a riveting storyteller, he should be in front of the camera as well as behind it.

“Winter Journal”—a “phenomenology of breathing.” written at age 64 in the interstices of more ambitious projects, a painfully candid journal of Paul Auster’s physical life. “self-medication…beloved little cigars & frequent glasses of wine…knowing they will do you grave harm.”

Paul Auster had a most striking face & how ironic that according to his poignant memoir “The Invention of Solitude,” his father avoided him not only emotionally but literally, did not look at him (for some mysterious reason). Paul himself, warmly sympathetic, gregarious.

University students occupying a university building (especially at a time when it was empty) is in no way equivalent to the Jan.6 insurrection against the US Capitol with lawmakers inside ratifying a US presidential election! But now this is a narrative emerging.
