Not necessarily a castle but equally amazing. Lalibela Ethiopia have incredible churches carved from rock in the ground dating back to the 12-13th century

Another shot of the infamous 'handbag' (last pic). You know about the handbags, right 😉?

The second type of rock-cut architecture is the most common: temples and churches.

Like Lalibela in Ethiopia, where King Gebre Meskel had fourteen churches carved from the hills, connected by tunnels and passages, to recreate his own Jerusalem in the 13th century.

Lalibela es uno de los sitios más misteriosos de África. Se trata de un complejo de once iglesias monolíticas talladas en la roca, las cuales fueron construidas de arriba hacia abajo.

Among the most astonishing Monolithic structures of Ancient History 🤯

The ~900yr old rock-cut Church of Saint George. Lalibela, Ethiopia

Referred to as the 8th Wonder of the World, and long claimed to have housed The Ark of The Covenant 😱

But there is more than one way to build underground.

Take the rock-cut churches of Lalibela in Ethiopia, built in the Middle Ages by King Gebre Meskel as his own version of the Holy City of Jerusalem.

Churches hewn from the rock itself — this is architecture in reverse.
