Session 6 was on Paleoclimates and Paleoenvironments and we heard about everything from seabird vomit (a running theme at Durham) to ancient phytoplankton. A really excellent session - well done to all speakers!

This is one of my favourite Figures in the (now fully formatted) IPCC AR6 report.

It shows that whereas almost any climate model can do a good job of simulating the recent past, models with too-high or too-low climate sensitivity fail to simulate deep-time paleoclimates.

Paleoclimates contribute the new (and improved!) overall assessment of climate sensitivity (ECS), of 'very likely' 2.0 to 5.0 degrees, and 'likely' 2.5 to 4.0 degrees, with a best estimate of 3 degrees C.
See IPCC AR6 Figure 7.18.

As taxonomists we think a lot about paleoclimates when interpreting species boundaries in view of their present and possible past distributions. Useful maps to look at, and better yet, involve them in quantitative studies.
