Jan Hoving Here's a real 1841 daguerreotype. D~ was introduced in 1839 but only reached maturity in the 1850s when other methods, e.g. the ambrotype, also appeared. By that time it had been improved upon considerably, to the extent that it was referred to as the 'American process'.
