The chemical in question is ethylene oxide (EtO), a fumigant used to protect dry foods like spices, pulses, grains, etc. from bacterial damage. EU banned EtO in 1991; the US has not banned it.

Ethylene oxide is a food fumigant that prevents microbial contamination, including bacteria, virus, and fungi. When used in permissible limits, it can aid in preventing the spread of foodborne illnesses and also give dried foods a longer shelf life.

Sahana Singh In the USA, EtO use in foods is allowed, but regulated. In India, the FSSAI prohibits its use in any food product. In the EU, the use of ethylene oxide as a food fumigant has been banned since 1991. In 2023, the EU termed the EtO a “pesticide residue” instead of “fumigant”.

नम्रता Ethylene oxide is not a pesticide. It's a fumigant gas used to sterilize spices from microbes & fungi. Sure we have a pesticide problem as well but this is 100% on the companies & FSSAI. There are other methods globally followed to sterilize spices but these companies chose this.

John Harrington Hërr Gordon DBL0AG ✈️ 9mmSMG You’d think the meticulous Germans would use one of their much more effective gasses if their intent was to harm.

I concur Zyclon B was used for a fumigant, not a war crime.
