Brian Brettschneider Interesting, often West Coast SST are below normal during La Niña = cooler summers. That part of puzzle may not develop until fall/winter, based on CANSIPS and ECMWF seasonal forecasts. Maybe composite is more accurate for ongoing La Niña events but not so much this summer?

Looks about right. Areas west of Cascades/Sierra in OR/WA/CA see the least thunderstorm activity in USA. Cold Pacific water = stable summertime airmass
