A successful trip to see nightjars tonight. A bit blowy, no flies, beautiful pink skies and 2 silhouetted nightjars seen, possibly up to 5 heard. My love for nightjars restored!

Last night's fieldwork also resulted in a bat capture and to our surprise it was ringed!! Can't wait to get the details on original ringing. We believe it to be a Natterer's but will get confirmation when the details come back. Save the Bats BBC Springwatch Steve Davis ๐Ÿ’™

The Nightjars tested our resolve last night & the Midges came to say hello. Our patience payed off with great views late into the evening. At one point 5 birds encircled us with a visual & audible treat.

Exciting news back on our ringed Bat capture. It was confirmed as Natterer's and was rung in a Purbeck Quarry as an immature last September, some 27km from our study heath. And is the first to have been recaught outside of purbeck, Save the Bats BTO BBC Springwatch

As mentioned, there does seem to be a dearth of insects, which seems to worsen year on year. The adults we have so far caught are good weights though and seem in good condition perhaps not enough to go round. Let's see what we find as the season goes on ๐Ÿคž BTO BBC Springwatch

What a shocking moment in the Nightjar nest!

Itโ€™s worth remembering the overall success story of Nightjars at RSPB Arne. Numbers of Nightjars are at record high of 60 pairs! BBC Springwatch

Well, there's something you don't see everyday, much discussion about this & it's hard to really understand what happened here. Amazing to see, no dout we'll be discussing more yet. Nest monitoring won't be the same this year! BBC Springwatch birdsofpooleharbour Ruben Evens birdsofpooleharbour

Nightjars begin to hunt for themselves around 18 days after hatching but donโ€™t become independent from their parents for another couple of weeks. Between them, two Nightjar chicks need around 300 insects to be delivered to the nest each night! BBC Springwatch

Spent a lovely evening just inside Lincs with the local Nightjars last night, with 3 or possibly 4 churring birds and a bonus Glow-worm. No Woodcocks, however, which is worrying given this has been a reliable site for them in the last couple of yearsโ€ฆ
