How fast are you sowing canola? Previous GRDC paddock survey identified that establishment could increase by 16% by reducing sowing speed. Just another factor to consider/weigh up GRDC North NSW DPI Agronomy
What’s the critical soil moisture content to establish canola? Been using evaporation covers, irrigation and rain-out shelters to evaluate moisture and temperature effects on est%. Great GRDC project lead by Andrew_Fletcher . Stay tuned for results. CSIRO NSW DPI Agronomy
Ever wondered if MAP fertiliser toxicity was worse with smaller canola seed? These GRDC results suggest no difference, however the improved establishment from larger seed helped compensate for some of the losses. GRDC North NSW DPI Agronomy GOA Barry Haskins
Roy Hamilton Kenton Porker James Venning Broden holland Graeme Sandral Barry Haskins GRDC GOA NSW DPI Agronomy Rohan Brill FYI - here’s some results from central NSW on plant density. I guess the negative side of low density is less weed competition and greater difficulty in fungicide timing and crop desiccation (due to greater range of crop development within the one plant).
Using a single disc seeder? On average, there was a 17%, 28% & 37% reduction in canola establishment as MAP increased from 50, 100 and 150kg/ha compared to Nil MAP. Be aware of your SBU%. GRDC North NSW DPI Agronomy
Interested in barley breeders comments on these suggested sowing date targets. Imo this is way out and needs getting right. Eg planet suits Anzac Day onwards here imo 🤔NSW DPI Agronomy

Results highlighting the benefit of sowing large diameter seed as canola seed depth increases. Key points
* biggest gains in est% came via removing <1.6mm seed
* large seed = larger cotyledons = quicker biomass production
