The foundation of BLACK education. The Abiel Smith school was drafted and built by the free blacks in 1835 as the nations first and only school for blacks. To be able to stand in the spot where Fredrick Douglas taught was a solemn feeling! #R12LLAC

Region 12 leaders (Marlin, Temple, Waco) started our day with a visit to the Museum of African American History in Boston. Opened in 1835, the Abiel School was the first building erected in the US for the sole purpose of housing a black public school.
