These avocets were among the shorebirds recorded by our volunteers on Blakeney Point today. They are readily identifiable by their long, black, up-turned bills, which they sweep from side to side in shallow water to catch aquatic insects, worms and crustaceans.

Dugongs, turtles, grey nurse sharks, whales, dolphins, migratory shorebirds and stunning coral reefs.

The Great Sandy Marine Park surrounding K’Gari (Fraser Island) is home to them all.

We're making sure they're better protected.

The shorebird team have been hard at work today erecting new fences at Greenshank’s Creek. This is to ensure that nests outside of the existing sanctuary area are protected from unintentional disturbance from visitors. Please respect signage and avoid the fenced off areas.
