May 18, 1980, 8:32 AM. A colossal landslide. Magma & hot fluids explode, surge outward like a hot hurricane. Column rises, ash falls for miles. Snowpack melts, mudflows converge, lahars move downvalley. A 9-hr eruption. Everything is changed.

Had to pop out to Canmore this morning.

The rivers are full and there is still a lot of snowpack to come down.

The reservoirs will fill up this spring.

Things may get dry later, but we can stop with all the dire water shortage warnings in Calgary now.

There is still lots of snowpack at the highest elevations of central Colorado. The Upper Arkansas River Basin snow water equivalent (SWE) is above normal for May 21. Runoff should continue to increase as temps warm, and the seasonal runoff peak should occur in the next few weeks.

California is about to have its largest snowpack in recorded history with another atmospheric river arriving tomorrow expected to bring 2-4 feet more snow.

The snowpack is currently 225% of the peak average.

This is an unscientific visual look at the Mountain 🏔️ from Tacoma.

Mid-May snowpack on Tahoma looks a little low, but similar to 2021 and 2023.

The snowpack in BC was very low this past winter everywhere, well, except for the Yukon drainage basin in the far north where it was average.

April CDM:
April was warmer than usual, especially in Northern Canada and the Prairie Region. Despite the rain, long-term deficits and low snowpack continue in Western Canada. Extreme to exceptional drought persists in Alberta and BC, with severe drought across much of the West.

Some takeaways here. The FED is planning to lower 11 feet this year, and this comes after a slightly above average snowpack year for the upper colorado water basin. What you see here is the priority of sending water to California and Arizona to grow crops in the desert

I took a little ride through the Hope Valley on Sunday. So pretty up there, just west of Markleeville. Lots of snowpack way up high above 8,000 feet. West Fork of the Carson River flowing fast with all of the snowmelt. Beautiful country for sure! mynews4.com/chimein

Miles and miles and miles of clear sky this morning from the top of Pikes. Definitely going to get a good bit of melting of the treeline-and-up snowpack today!
