On this day in 1916, in Ireland, there began a revolutionary nationalist uprising against British colonialism. The Easter uprising would be the first move in a heroic struggle against the British Empire and towards the ending of the oppression of Ireland.

The trial is now taking place at Bolton Crown Court. We encourage all local activists to get over to support the Elbit 3 and raise our demand for an end to UK arms supplies to Israel.

This struggle for a socialist Ireland continues to this day against the British occupation of 'Northern Ireland' and those who would compromise with imperialism.

and indeed the insurrection was commanded by the communist James Connolly who wanted to achieve a workers' republic and a socialist Ireland.

Although most of the leaders were bourgeois nationalists there were many communist militants from the Irish Citizens Army who fought in the battle

Unfortunately the British state stopped at nothing to crush the movement and flooded the city with soldiers, vastly outnumbering the rebels. After days of brave resistance resulting in hundreds of deaths, the rebels were defeated and the leadership,

including a wounded Connolly, were executed.

But this would not stop the demand for justice and independence and within years the upheaval had spread across Ireland and would soon force the empire to make major concessions which would inspire millions of people around the world.
