It's no secret that AI hallucinates. As tech like Israel's Lavender enters the battlefield, how much error are we willing to tolerate?

'It's not hyperbolic to say that new laws in this space will literally be the difference between life and death,' says Taylor Owen.

Join us online or in person in Ottawa for a conversation about Bill C-63. Now that the dust has settled, we know the major points of debate, and the next step is to try to make sense of it all. I am sure our conversation will be lively - looking forward to it! Florian Martin-Bariteau ᴀᴋᴀ FMB Michael Geist

We got a lovely old school long-form, deep dive TVO Today | The Agenda panel for you tonight on all things TikTok -- from the ban and divestment to the nature of the threat it poses and if democratic countries should be in the business of banning social media platforms.

2024 is shaping up to be the year of the deepfake.

And we're not just talking about a few viral deepfakes of Taylor Swift or Joe Biden. We might be looking at the “deepfakification” of the entire internet, says Max Bell School of Public Policy Centre for Media, Technology & Democracy expert Taylor Owen.

We hear a lot about how tech regulation is a threat to free expression, but rather less about how setting online safety requirements can boost the right to free expression & association of women, LGBTQ+ people and a host of other groups for whom the status quo just doesn’t work

There is a lot to discuss about the Online Harms Act. Articles like this are unhelpful as they are so over the top that readers are not armed with information about how the law actually works to agree or disagree with the author.- Let's dial this down. /1

Ignoring entirely the risk assessments, codes of practice, user empowerment tools, transparency requirements, ombudsperson, and the CSAM and NCII duties that together make up 90% of the Act, and which are more moderate than the UK approach, and more cautious than the EU's.

This has taken on a bit of a life of its own. Somewhat bizarrely, it's being interpreted by many as support for the C63 CC & HRA provisions. In fact, I meant it as an observation that one can have reasonable concerns w/ elements of those provisions without resorting to hysteria.

I am not a crim lawyer - I deal with crim law only in specific tech or speech contexts. Obviously a thought crime - if Bill C63 proposed that - is a no go in a democratic society that values free expression. But is that what is proposed? See below explanation. Qs I am asking: /1

Ok, I'll bite. Skip this hyperbolic tweet and the deeply flawed article it cites, and instead take a breath and listen to this immensely thoughtful The Backbench Pod conversation between Richard Moon, Emily Laidlaw and Mattea Roach  canadaland.com/podcast/85-the…
